Push to Make Switch

A Push to Make Switch is a type of electrical switch where the connection inside the switch is wired to be normally open.

When the switch is compressed the connection is made which allows the electricity to flow and the device the switch is connected to switch “on”. Pushing the switch makes the connection – hence the name “Push to Make”.

Push to make switches can also be referred to as “normally open” because the connection is open until the switch is compressed.

The opposite of a push to make switch is called a push to break switch. In this type of switch, the connection is always “made” and compressing the switch will break the electrical connection. This type of switch is most used for emergency stop switches.

Push to Make Examples 

Most switches are push to make switches. They are the most common device used throughout many industries and most of the switches we come into contact with on a daily basis are push to make switches.

Light Switches – A light switch is a push to make switch as they are wired normally open and the electrical connection is made when the switch is turned on.

Movable bed controls– a medical bed can be moved up or down at the head or the feet to make the patient comfortable. This can use a push to make hand control or footswitch. Very often this will be a momentary switch as the user will have to keep the switch compressed for the connection to remain intact. Once the compression is removed the connection will be lost and the movement will stop.
